Bare Essentials: You Don’t Need More Content; You Need More Visibility

Perception

You think you need more content. There are gaps. Requests for “new” content keep streaming in. It feels like you don’t have enough to work with.

Reality

You already have more content than you think.

You just can’t find it.

The problem isn’t scarcity.

It’s visibility.

Findability and discoverability (and no, those are not the same thing) are broken.

So teams recreate what already exists, wasting time and budget, and still end up feeling behind.

You don’t need more content.

You need a search and rescue team.

Why It Matters

  • If you can’t find content, you can’t use it, and that’s a wasted investment.
  • Teams duplicate work because they don’t know what exists, or where to try to find out if it does.
  • Effort, time, and budget get burned up recreating instead of optimizing what exists.
  • Innovation suffers because teams are stuck in the “start from scratch” cycle instead of makes what works even better.

What Most Teams Get Wrong

  1. Investing in volume instead of structure.
  2. Treating “publish” as the finish line for content.
  3. Ignoring internal merchandising, search, tagging, and governance.
  4. Not considering and designing for reuse from the start.

What to Do Instead

  1. Run a visibility audit: what’s actually findable, discoverable, tagged, reusable?
  2. Define and track a reuse rate (e.g., % of content components/assets reused within 12 months).
  3. Improve internal search, tagging, and content merchandising (if others don’t know it’s available, does it actually exist?).
  4. Prioritize making existing content more usable before creating more.

If it feels like you’re constantly (re)creating content, it’s worth looking at how visible (search able, findable, discoverable) and usable your existing content really is. That’s exactly where we help teams unlock value.
